About this guide

Heat Pump Hot Water Guide is an independent Australian website that explains heat pump hot water in plain English: what the rebates are in each state, what Victoria's 2027 gas hot water rule means, what these systems cost to buy and run, and what to check before you sign a quote.

Who writes it?

The guides are researched and written by Daniel Kilkelly, an Australian who builds and runs small information websites. Daniel is not a plumber, electrician, energy adviser or financial adviser, and he does not sell or install hot water systems. His job here is research: reading the official program pages, regulator registers and published government figures, and turning them into clear answers with the source attached.

That means this site will not tell you it has tested a product, measured a unit in a backyard or installed one. It hasn't. When a page gives a figure, the source is linked on that page and listed on the sources page.

Why does this site exist?

Searches for heat pump hot water have grown fast in Australia, driven by rebates, higher gas prices and Victoria's rule that a failed gas hot water system must be replaced with an electric one from 1 March 2027. Most of what turns up in search results is written by people selling systems. This site is meant to be the page you read before you talk to them.

Is it independent?

Yes. The site is not affiliated with, paid by or endorsed by any manufacturer, retailer, installer, energy company or government body. There are no affiliate links. The site may show advertising in future (Google AdSense) to cover its costs. If that happens, ads will be clearly separate from the content and will not change what the guides say. If affiliate links are ever added, every one will be disclosed on the page where it appears.

How are pages kept up to date?

Rebates change often, sometimes with little notice. Every page shows when its facts were last checked (currently November 2026). Rebate figures are kept in one place in the site's data so they can be updated together, and each one carries the official page it came from. The editorial policy explains the process in full.
