Short answer
Below are 13 heat pump brands sold in Australia, with what each manufacturer states on its own Australian website: integrated or split, refrigerant, tank sizes, operating temperature, noise, warranty and where it is made. This is not a ranking. I haven't tested any of these products, and the figures are the makers' own claims.
On this page
Searches for the "best heat pump hot water system in Australia" mostly turn up retailer lists with affiliate links or installers pushing the brand they stock. I can't honestly tell you which brand is best, because nobody I could find has published independent side-by-side tests of the current models. CHOICE says it doesn't have the facilities to test heat pump hot water systems, and compiles its comparison from manufacturer and retailer data (CHOICE). What I can do is put the manufacturers' own facts in one place, so you can compare like with like and ask better questions.
How to read this page
- Alphabetical order. Nothing here is ranked.
- "Not stated" means I couldn't find it on the pages I read. The brand may publish it in a spec sheet or manual.
- Noise figures are not comparable across brands. Makers measure at 1, 2 or 3 metres, in a lab or not, or don't say. The federal government's own review notes noise data "not provided in a consistent manner (nor measured on a consistent basis)" (Decision RIS, April 2026).
- Minimum temperatures are the lower end of each stated operating range. Some units switch to an electric element below a set point, which costs more to run.
- Warranties are headline wording only. Full terms (labour, pro-rata, water quality exclusions) are in each brand's warranty booklet.
- Register rows is the number of that brand's current model rows I counted in the Clean Energy Regulator's heat pump register file on 3 November 2026 (CER data). It shows the model is STC eligible, not that it is good.

Which refrigerant is better: CO2, R290 or R134a?
Your Home lists the common refrigerants as R290 (propane), R744 (CO2), R134a and R513A. It gives R134a a global warming potential of 1,430 and R513A 629, while propane and CO2 are natural refrigerants with a GWP of 3 and 1 (Your Home). For the Victorian Solar Homes rebate, products must use refrigerant with a GWP below 700 (Solar Victoria). Renew notes that many heat pumps suited to sub-zero climates use CO2 (Renew). Most of the brands above list R290 for at least one of their integrated models.
Which brands are made in Australia?
Several manufacturers say some or all of a model is made here: Dux (Ecosmart 200 L and 285 L), Reclaim Energy (Eco R290, and the tank and controller of its CO2 system), Rheem (HDc270 and the split system tank), Rinnai (Enviroflo AR, and the split system tanks) and Thermann (integrated). This matters in Victoria, where an eligible locally made product can get a Solar Homes rebate of up to $1,400 instead of $1,000. Check Solar Victoria's product list for which models count as locally made for the rebate (Solar Victoria).
Which brands are missing?
I didn't research Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Midea's own site, Haier, Solahart, Aquatech, Hydrotherm, Everhot or Siddons. Several of them have models on the Clean Energy Regulator register. Their absence here says nothing about their quality: I only include facts I have read on the manufacturer's own page.
