Short answer

There is no Queensland Government heat pump hot water rebate open right now. The Climate Smart Energy Savers program, which offered $300 to $1,000 cash back, closed for installations after 4 December 2023. Queenslanders can still get the federal STC discount, and South East Queensland households can use the free midday power window in the Solar Sharer Offer.

If you searched for a Queensland heat pump rebate and found an installer ad promising one, it is almost certainly the federal STC discount, which applies everywhere in Australia. The state program is gone. Here is what is left, and why Queensland's climate and tariffs still make heat pumps worth a look.

Is there a Queensland heat pump rebate in 2026?

QueenslandClosed

Climate Smart Energy Savers (closed)

What you get
The program offered $300 to $1,000 cash back on energy efficient appliances, including heat pump hot water. It has closed and been finalised.
Who can get it
  • No longer available. Purchases had to be made and installed by 4 December 2023.
Key dates
Closed for installations after 4 December 2023.
How to get it
Not available. Queenslanders can still get federal STCs on an eligible heat pump.

Climate Smart Energy Savers program results (media statement, 14 April 2024) (Queensland Government). Last checked: November 2026.

The Queensland Government's own summary of the program says more than 72,700 households received cash back, including on 1,604 solar and heat pump hot water systems, under the "now-closed" Climate Smart Energy Savers program (Queensland Government). Purchases had to be made and installed by 4 December 2023 (Queensland Government). The old program pages now redirect to a general home energy savings page that lists no hot water rebate (qld.gov.au).

What can Queenslanders still claim?

Australia-wideOpen

Small-scale technology certificates (STCs)

What you get
A point-of-sale discount worth the market value of the STCs your model earns. The number depends on the model, your postcode zone and the year it is installed, and it falls each year until the scheme ends in 2030.
Who can get it
  • Any home or business in Australia
  • The heat pump model must be on the Clean Energy Regulator's register of solar water heaters, with a tank under 425 L
  • Installed by tradespeople meeting your state or territory licensing rules
Key dates
Installed in 2026: 5-year deeming period. 2027: 4 years. 2028: 3. 2029: 2. 2030: 1. The scheme ends on 31 December 2030.
How to get it
Most people assign the STCs to the installer or retailer (a registered agent), who takes their value off the price. You can also create and sell them yourself within 12 months of installation.
Notes
The Clean Energy Regulator does not set the price agents pay. The STC clearing house price is capped at $40 excluding GST, and open market prices vary daily.

Brisbane, the Gold Coast and most of the south east are in heat pump zone 3. Cairns and Townsville are in zone 1 (CER postcode zones). My STC guide shows how the number is worked out. The federal Household Energy Upgrades Fund also offers discounted loans that cover heat pumps (energy.gov.au).

Does a heat pump make sense in Queensland without a state rebate?

Often, yes, because of the climate. Your Home says air source heat pumps "work best in relatively warm, humid climates" (Your Home). Brisbane's coldest month has a mean minimum of 10.6°C at the Bureau of Meteorology's Brisbane station (BoM), well above the 5°C mark below which energy.gov.au says not all models are designed to work (energy.gov.au). Mild winters mean less work for the heat pump and less reliance on a backup element.

On the other side, if your current electric tank runs on a controlled load tariff, you are already paying a lower rate for its power, so the running cost gap is smaller than the efficiency figures alone suggest. Whether a heat pump pays back depends on what you are replacing and which tariff you are on.

How do controlled load tariffs work with a heat pump?

In Energex's area, Tariff 31 (super economy, Controlled Load 1) supplies 8 or more hours, historically overnight, and Tariff 33 (economy, Controlled Load 2) supplies 16 or more hours, usually outside 4pm to 9pm. Energex says the timing of economy tariffs "has moved from managing evening peaks towards solar soaking of rooftop generation", so supply is typically interrupted in the morning peak and resumed in the middle of the day (Energex).

Not every heat pump suits these tariffs. Your Home warns that some heat pump systems "are not compatible with either type of controlled load, while others are only compatible with Controlled Load 2" (Your Home). Check the manufacturer's installation manual before you assume your existing Tariff 31 circuit will work.

What about free midday power in South East Queensland?

South East Queensland is one of the three regions where the federal Solar Sharer Offer has been available since 1 July 2026. Eligible households with a smart meter who opt in get free electricity from 11am to 2pm every day, up to 24 kWh (energy.gov.au). You don't need solar panels. A heat pump with a timer, wired to the general circuit, can be set to heat in that window. Energy Made Easy notes that appliances on a controlled load circuit are charged separately and "will not benefit from the free usage period" (Energy Made Easy).

What should Queenslanders compare in a quote?

  • The STC count and dollar value per STC, written on the quote.
  • Whether the unit works on your current tariff (controlled load or general).
  • Whether it has a timer you can set for the solar or free power window.
  • For coastal homes, whether the manufacturer allows installation near salt air. The Victorian regulator's installation guidance mentions keeping units away from salty or corrosive environments, and manufacturers set their own limits.

See the Brisbane guide and heat pump vs solar hot water, which is a closer contest in sunny Queensland than in the south.
