Short answer

In Perth the only upfront discount is the federal STC, as I found no WA Government heat pump rebate. The climate suits heat pumps (July mean minimum 8.1°C at Perth Metro), and Perth is in heat pump zone 3. WA isn't covered by the Solar Sharer free window, so the cheapest way to run one is on your own rooftop solar with a timer.

WA rebate questions sit near the top of Google's suggestions for heat pump searches, and the answer is simpler than the ads suggest: there is one discount, it is federal, and your installer applies it. That puts more weight on comparing quotes and on running the unit cleverly.

Is there a heat pump rebate in Perth?

Only the federal STC discount. The WA energy policy page points to the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme as the incentive and lists the WA Residential Battery Scheme (batteries) and energy buyback schemes as the state programs (Energy Policy WA). The 2026-27 WA Budget household items don't include a hot water rebate (WA Budget). Energy Ahead, a hardship program, replaces appliances "such as refrigerators" for some Synergy and Horizon Power customers (WA Government). Details on the WA rebates page.

How many STCs will a Perth heat pump get?

Perth (5301 to 6256) is in heat pump zone 3 (CER postcode zones). In the CER's heat pump data file, zone 3 figures range from 13 to 49 over the 10-year deeming period, with a middle value of 30 (my count, 3 November 2026). Installed in 2026, a model gets half its listed figure; in 2027, 40%. A model listed at 30 earns 15 STCs if installed in 2026. Ask each installer what they pay per STC. See STCs explained.

Does Perth's climate suit a heat pump?

Yes. Perth Metro records a July mean minimum of 8.1°C and a February mean maximum of 31.7°C (BoM). Mild winters mean the backup element should rarely be needed. In summer, heat pumps work at their most efficient, and Your Home notes heating in the warmer afternoon air improves efficiency further (Your Home).

How should I run a heat pump in Perth?

WA isn't part of the federal Solar Sharer Offer, which covers NSW, South East Queensland and South Australia. The federal government says it is working with other jurisdictions on a possible expansion, with no dates (energy.gov.au). So for Perth homes:

  • With rooftop solar: set the heat pump's timer to the middle of the day. The Clean Energy Regulator suggests exactly this (CER), and energy.gov.au gives 10am to 4pm in summer and 11am to 2pm in winter as the best self-consumption hours.
  • Without solar: check your retailer's plans for cheaper hours and set the timer to match. I haven't checked Synergy's current plans.

Heat pump or solar hot water in Perth?

Both are low running cost options in a sunny climate, and both earn STCs. If your roof is already covered in solar panels, a heat pump on a midday timer avoids a second set of roof collectors. See heat pump vs solar hot water.

What should Perth buyers compare?

  • STC count and value per STC (the biggest discount you will get).
  • Removal of the old unit and any electrical work, itemised.
  • A timer or solar mode.
  • The stated noise level and the planned spot. See the noise guide.
  • Warranty on the tank and the heat pump. See the brand overview.
